You can upgrade your characters by tapping the Astrotrain on the game screen's bottom right. Upgrades will improve armor and weapons and increase your time on a vehicle. 

Once you select a character to upgrade, you can upgrade it in exchange for gems or use coins and crystals. Remember that upgrading the character with coins and crystals takes longer, but the upgrade is performed immediately when gems are used.
