Next area on the map is unlocked once you have completed all story missions in the previous one. Sometimes story missions are locked until you complete a quests. Tapping the quest symbol on the left of your screen will display the tasks you need to perform to complete the quest. Usually quests involve collecting items and defeating pigs in scout missions.
